The
Trophy Bassmasters had a very unusual tournament at the Detroit River
recently as most of the fish came within a stone’s throw of the launch ramp.
Normally tournaments on the Detroit River with adjoining Lake Erie to the
south and Lake St Clair to the North result in long boat rides to find
concentrations of 14” keeper size bass. This event saw all but 6 of the 19
bass weighed in caught within 25 yards of the launch. Steve Ganger reported
that he had his 5 fish limit and was culling smaller fish by 9AM. He
parlayed his catch into a 1st place finish with 13.06lbs.
Finishing 2nd was Bob Flowers who also used the boat ramp but in
a different time frame. Flowers made the long run out into Lake Erie and
caught 2 smallmouth including the day’s big bass at 4.36lb before a strong
storm drove he and his partner Vern Boecher back to the safety of the river.
There in the final 20 minutes of the day he nailed 3 largemouth to finish
out his 5 fish limit of 11.27lbs to claim the runner up spot. Claiming 3rd
was rookie Christian Olson. He had 3 fish totaling 6.95lbs. Olson said he
caught 2 of his fish and lost several others at the ramp. The 12 anglers
total weight for the 19 bass was 56.91lbs. As a side note Dane Ganger,
brother of Steve and guest of the club each year at the Detroit River also
had a five bass limit that weighed 12.00lbs even and would have placed him 2nd.
His fish came from where else? The boat ramp. |
